The call came in on a Wednesday afternoon. Our customer service line doesn't get a lot of calls — most people order online — so when it rang, we picked up.
The voice on the other end was deep. Very deep. And there was a sound underneath it — a low, resonant howl, like wind through a canyon, that we could feel more than hear.
"I ordered the Dark Roast," the voice said. "Three weeks ago."
We pulled up the order. It was there — placed from an address in the Ozark Mountains that, when we looked it up later, appeared to be a hollow in a ridge that didn't show up on any map.
"It shows delivered," we said.
"It was not delivered," the voice said. Very calmly. "I was watching."
We reshipped immediately. Expedited. No questions asked. We also threw in a bag of S'mores Coffee as an apology.
Three days later we got an email. It said: "Received. The extra bag was unnecessary but appreciated. The Dark Roast is acceptable. I will reorder."
From the Ozark Howler, "acceptable" felt like a five-star review.
We've flagged his account for priority shipping. Permanently.
