Medium roast is where the bean and the roast meet in the middle. The origin flavors are still present — you can taste where the coffee came from — but the roast has developed enough body and sweetness to make it approachable and balanced. It's not trying to be anything other than what it is: a great, versatile cup of coffee.
Why medium roast is underrated:
It works in every brew method. Pour-over, French press, drip, cold brew, Aeropress — medium roast performs well across all of them. Dark roast can overwhelm delicate brew methods. Light roast can get lost in a French press. Medium hits the middle.
It's the best cold brew base. The lower acidity and balanced sweetness of a medium roast make it ideal for cold brew — smooth, clean, not bitter.
It's the best entry point for black coffee. If you're trying to make the switch from cream and sugar, medium roast is where you start. Approachable enough to drink black, complex enough to be interesting.
It's consistent. Batch after batch, medium roast delivers a reliable, balanced cup. That consistency is undervalued.
