Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp sitting on a truck tailgate at the South Carolina boat landing at sunrise holding a Foxhole Coffee mug with Spanish moss and swamp in background

The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp Is a Morning Person. We Were Surprised.

The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp has a reputation for aggression. Car damage. Late-night encounters. General hostility toward humans and their vehicles. This reputation is well-documented and we are not here to dispute it.

What we are here to report is that at 6:15 AM on a Tuesday in South Carolina, the Lizard Man was sitting on our tailgate drinking a cup of Foxhole Coffee and watching the sunrise, and he seemed completely fine.

We had pulled over at a boat landing on Scape Ore Swamp to brew a quick cup before fishing. We set up the camp stove, started the Aeropress, and when we turned around, he was just there. Sitting on the tailgate. Watching us.

We made two cups. Set one on the tailgate beside him.

He picked it up. Drank it. Looked at the sunrise. Drank some more.

We fished for three hours. He sat on the tailgate the whole time, occasionally refilling from the thermos we'd left out. When we packed up to leave, he got off the tailgate, looked at us, and walked back into the swamp.

No aggression. No car damage. Just a reptilian cryptid who, it turns out, is a morning person and appreciates a good cup of coffee at sunrise.
