We host a monthly coffee tasting at the roastery. Open to the public. No reservations required. We didn't think that policy would ever cause problems.
Then the Flatwoods Monster showed up.
She arrived at 6:58 PM, two minutes before we opened. Twelve feet tall, glowing eyes, that distinctive spade-shaped head, the hover-skirt thing she does. She waited outside the door like a normal person. When we unlocked it, she nodded and came in.
She was, genuinely, the most attentive taster we've ever had. She smelled each cup before drinking. She took notes — we don't know how, we didn't ask. When we got to the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, she paused, looked at us, and said something in a frequency we couldn't quite hear but felt in our chests.
We took that as a compliment.
She stayed for the full two hours. Tried everything. Bought two bags of the Yirgacheffe on her way out. Paid in cash. Exact change.
We've added "cryptid-friendly" to our event listings. Attendance has been interesting ever since.
