Your coffee equipment is dirty. We say this with confidence because almost everyone's coffee equipment is dirty, and dirty equipment is silently ruining your coffee every single day.
Coffee oils go rancid. Every brew leaves behind a thin layer of coffee oils on your equipment. Those oils oxidize and go rancid within days. If you've ever had coffee that tasted bitter or off even though you used good beans and brewed correctly, rancid oil residue is often the culprit.
By equipment:
French press: Disassemble and wash every part with hot soapy water after every use. The mesh filter traps oils — rinse it thoroughly.
Pour-over dripper: Rinse with hot water after every use. Deep clean weekly with a coffee equipment cleaner or a baking soda rinse.
Drip machine: Run a cycle of equal parts white vinegar and water monthly. Follow with two plain water cycles. Wipe the carafe with soapy water after every use.
Moka pot: Never use soap — it strips the seasoning. Rinse with hot water only. Dry completely before storing.
Grinder: Brush out grounds after every use. Deep clean monthly with grinder cleaning tablets or uncooked rice (blade grinders only).
Aeropress: Rinse immediately after use. The rubber plunger needs occasional soap cleaning to prevent buildup.
Clean equipment. Better coffee. Every time.
