French press and Foxhole Coffee Dark Roast at a forest campsite

French Press Mastery: The Foxhole Guide to a Bold, Full-Body Brew

If you want coffee with weight — coffee that actually tastes like something — the French press is your weapon of choice. No paper filters stealing your oils. No complicated equipment. Just grounds, hot water, and patience. Here's how to do it right.

Coarse grind only. Fine grounds in a French press turn your coffee into mud. Go coarse — think rough sea salt. If your grinder only does fine, get a better grinder. It's worth it.

The ratio: 1:15. One gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. For a standard 32oz press, that's about 60 grams of coffee. Use a scale. Eyeballing is for amateurs.

Water at 200°F. Boil, then let it sit off heat for 45 seconds. Pour slowly and evenly over the grounds.

Bloom first. Pour just enough water to saturate the grounds, stir gently, and wait 30 seconds. You'll see it bubble — that's CO2 releasing. Good sign.

Four minutes. Don't touch it. Set a timer. Walk away. Come back in four minutes and press slowly and steadily. If it's hard to press, your grind is too fine. If it falls with no resistance, too coarse.

Pour immediately. Don't let it sit in the press — it'll over-extract and go bitter. Pour it all out, even if you're not drinking it all yet.

The French press rewards patience and punishes shortcuts. Just like everything worth doing.
