The Aeropress is the sleeper pick of the coffee world. Compact, nearly indestructible, fast, and capable of producing anything from espresso-style concentrate to a clean, smooth cup that rivals pour-over. It's the perfect field brew tool — and most people still haven't figured that out.
Grind medium-fine. Similar to pour-over. Adjust based on your target — finer for concentrate, coarser for a longer steep.
Standard recipe: inverted method. Flip the Aeropress upside down (plunger end down). Add 17g of coffee. Pour 250g of water at 200°F. Stir for 10 seconds. Put the cap and filter on. Steep for 1:30. Flip onto your mug and press slowly for 30 seconds.
Total brew time: about 2 minutes. Faster than pour-over, more control than a French press, easier to clean than both.
Adjust and experiment. The Aeropress rewards tinkering. Change the steep time, the grind, the water temp, the ratio. There's an annual World Aeropress Championship where competitors use wildly different recipes — because the machine is that flexible.
For camp use: it's nearly unbreakable, weighs almost nothing, and works with any heat source. It's the one brew tool we'd take if we could only take one.
